OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — NYIT women's tennis produced the top cumulative GPA of any team in the East Coast Conference, while NYIT men's basketball and men's tennis had the league's best GPAs in their respective sports, commissioner Robert Dranoff announced Thursday.
The women's tennis team had a remarkable GPA of 3.765. That academic success came in addition to reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Championships.
The men's tennis team also reached its Sweet 16, while the men's basketball team had a five-win improvement in Kevin Hamilton's first season as head coach.
In all, 125 NYIT student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.25 during the 2016-17 academic year and earned spots on the ECC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
"Our student-athletes continue to show that you can win championships on the fields and courts of play and be highly successful in the classroom at the same time," interim athletic director Dan Vélez said. "The 2016-17 academic year saw our student-athletes achieve a department-wide GPA of more than 3.2. They also finished 78th nationally in Division II in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings. These achievements are a direct indication that our student-athletes are just that. They take pride in everything that they do and continue to strive to win in every aspect of the student-athlete life — in the classroom, on the field and courts of competition, and in the community.
"Winning championships is always nice, but seeing our student-athletes continue to succeed and perform in the classroom at a high level will always be something in which we take extreme pride."
