OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — After recently signing a professional contract with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the independent American Association, NYIT baseball product Louis Mele still has collegiate accolades to claim.
Mele has been named to the aXcess Baseball All-Long Island team for the third time in his career.
A third baseman from Bethpage, Mele finished his four-year NYIT career with a .301 average, 17 homers and 98 RBIs in 568 at-bats. He hit a team-leading .341 as a senior and reached base safely in 15 straight games late in his senior season.
As a sophomore, Mele led all Long Island collegians with nine homers.
Mele also was selected NYIT's co-Senior Male Athlete of the Year.
With the Canaries, Mele is hitting .247 with two homers and seven RBIs in 23 games.
