CARY, N.C. — The NYIT baseball team suffered a pair of losses at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Friday.

Franklin Pierce handed NYIT a 7-0 loss in the opener. The Bears then fell to St. Augustine's, 15-10, in a slugfest.

Against Franklin Pierce, freshman catcher Joseph Kelly continued a strong opening week to his collegiate career. Three days after his eighth-inning solo homer forced a tie with Pace, Kelly threw out all five would-be base stealers.

Chris Nappi allowed four runs on five hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings in his collegiate debut. Junior Ariel Taveras, who attended NYIT the past two academic years but did not participate in baseball, later made his Bears debut with a scoreless eighth inning.

Jake Lebel had two of NYIT's four hits.

In Game 2, Zach White and Joey Fusco surrendered a combined 13 runs (eight earned) in 3 2/3 innings and NYIT found itself in an 11-2 hole. But Matt Bartnik followed with 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings as the Bears made a comeback bid.

Ryan Kuskowski homered and had two RBIs and two runs scored. Brendan Dowd went 3-for-6 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Dominic Paolo had three hits in his first collegiate game with a plate appearance.

NYIT (0-2-1) surrendered 23 hits against St. Augustine's.

The Bears complete their competition in North Carolina on Saturday with games against Dominican (N.Y.) and Findlay.
