Baseball's Zach Kleinwaks hitting sizzling .458 in summer league

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Zach Kleinwaks is lighting up in the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League this summer. The rising junior on the NYIT baseball team is hitting .458 (11-for-24) with two doubles, two triples, one homer and 13 RBIs with the Long Island Sound.

"I think the reason I'm doing so well this summer is that I changed my stance a little bit so I'd be more closed," Kleinwaks said. "By doing that, basically I hit the offspeed pitches much better. I'd say at least half of my hits this summer have come from offspeed pitches."

In his 27 games this past season with the Bears, Kleinwaks hit .278 (22-for-79) with one homer and 11 RBIs. He was named to the East Coast Conference weekly honor roll on May 7.

Other top NYIT summer-ball performers in the LICBL include infielder Andrew Florides, who is hitting .327 (17-for-52), and signee Dean Fazah, a left-hander who has a 0.91 ERA.

Florides also has one homer, 14 RBIs and seven stolen bases through the 14 games with the Lightning.

Fazah, a product of Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows, allowed one run in five innings on June 16 in his lone start with the LICBL's NorEasters. He has not surrendered a run in three relief appearances.

Signee Ryan Mueller, a right-hander from Lynbrook High School, has a 2.69 ERA in four appearances (two starts) as Fazah's teammate with the NorEasters.
