Men's basketball suffers first loss despite 32 points from Jeffrey Hayden

NEWARK, Del. — The NYIT men's basketball team is returning to Old Westbury for its home opener at .500 on the season.

After winning against host Wilmington (Del.) in the CACC/ECC Challenge opener, the Bears fell on the same court to USciences on Saturday evening. The Devils defeated NYIT, 79-67, despite 32 points from junior Jeffrey Hayden.

Hayden's outburst fell two points shy of matching his career high, which came in his collegiate debut against Concordia (N.Y.) on Nov. 21, 2015.

Against USciences, Hayden shot 10-for-15 from the field and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. He is averaging 29.0 ppg on the young season.

NYIT's only lead came on a game-opening field goal from Hayden. Still, the Bears remained within five points after Szu Yao Sun fed Hayden for a layup with 15 minutes, 45 seconds left in the second half.

The Bears make their home debut on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Caldwell.
