OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Former NYIT standout Jon Feiler has signed his first professional basketball contract.
Feiler will play this season for Gzira Athleta basketball club in Malta.
The country is located in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicily and the North African coast.
"It's everything I've worked for since I was a kid," Feiler said while visiting his alma mater on Monday. "To be able to finally realize it, all the hard work came together."
Admittedly, Feiler needed to do some internet research about his new home.
"I've been researching everything," he said. "It beautiful — an island with palm trees."
A 6-foot-8 forward from Smithtown on Long Island, Feiler led Division II nationally in rebounds per game (14.8) and double-doubles (22) last season. He also was named to the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II All-Met first team.
Feiler averaged 15.1 points and 12.4 rebounds per game during his three-year career at NYIT, which included 59 appearances (58 starts).
"Leading the nation in rebounding was pretty cool," Feiler said.
