OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The NYIT men's basketball team stumbled in its East Coast Conference opener on Wednesday.
Despite 20 points from Kieran Hamilton, Mercy defeated the Bears, 100-71, at Recreation Hall.
NYIT committed 26 turnovers to Mercy's 10 in the loss. The Bears also shot 11-for-30 from the free-throw line.
Jeffrey Hayden, coming off a school-record 49 points against Adelphi on Monday, picked up three first-half fouls that limited his playing time before intermission. Hayden nonetheless produced his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
NYIT led 15-12 after Hamilton's layup with 10 minutes, 1 second remaining in the first half. However, the Mavericks (5-2, 1-0 ECC) built an 18-point lead before the break. NYIT got no closer than 49-37 in the second half.
"We were not ready to play a complete game," coach Kevin Hamilton said.
The Bears (2-6, 0-1 ECC) have now lost five straight games. They have surrendered 100-plus points in two of the last three games.
NYIT returns to action Saturday at Bridgeport.
