Luis Cartagena Jr. named ECAC D2 Rookie of Week

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Freshman point guard Luis Cartagena Jr. made his first career start on Friday at Roberts Wesleyan. He proceeded to tally a career-high 20 points.

Now, Cartagena has been recognized as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference D2 Rookie of the Week.

Against Roberts Wesleyan, NYIT took its first lead of the second half, 74-73, when Cartagena hit a three-pointer with six minutes remaining. The Bears ultimately fell, 91-81, to the Redhawks.

Cartagena, returning to a role off the bench on Sunday, followed up his impressive showing against Roberts Wesleyan with eight points, two steals and an assist in 18 minutes at Daemen.

For the season, Cartagena is averaging 6.6 points per game.

The ECAC has 26 Division II member institutions spanning from Connecticut to Georgia and spanning as far west as Missouri.
