D2CCA names men's basketball's Jeffrey Hayden second-team All-East Region

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Jeffrey Hayden's standout junior season with the NYIT men's basketball team has resulted in another honor.

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association has named Hayden to its All-East Region second team.

Hayden already had claimed first-team All-East Coast Conference honors after leading the league in scoring at 23.2 ppg in 2017-18. The scoring average marked the fourth-highest single-season total in NYIT men's basketball history.

He also set the ECC single-season field-goal record with 252, topping the total from NYIT's Bobby Cunningham established in 1994-95 (247).

Hayden tallied his 1,000th career point with a pair of fourth-quarter free throws at the District of Columbia on Jan. 20. By season's end, he upped his career total to 1,259 points, within five of cracking the top 10 in NYIT history.

Hayden scored a program-record 49 points against Adelphi on Dec. 4, topping 48-point efforts from Kelvin Hicks in the Division II national championship game against Virginia Union on March 20, 1980, and by Hilton Armstrong against Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison on March 6, 1974.

The 49-point outburst ultimately fell two points shy of matching the highest scoring total in a Division II game in 2017-18.

Hayden also led NYIT in rebounds per game with 7.5.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Justin Reyes earned the D2CCA East Region Player of the Year honor. Reyes joined Saint Anselm guard Tim Guers, Southern New Hampshire forward Chris Walters, Merrimack's Juvaris Hayes and Goldey-Beacom's Corey Taite on the all-region first team.

The second team included Hayden, Bentley guard Ryan Richmond, Saint Michael's guard Levi Holmes, Felician guard Terrell Spaulding and New Haven guard Danny Upchurch.
