Men's lacrosse hands Mercy first ECC loss, enters Battle of the Boulevard unbeaten

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — The NYIT men's lacrosse team scored a huge win against 10th-ranked Mercy on Saturday.

With the score even, Andrew Zito and Austin Fitzpatrick consecutively tallied goals to open the fourth quarter and NYIT went on to a 9-7 win.

The No. 11 Bears improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the East Coast Conference.

Mercy (10-2, 4-1 ECC) was handed its first conference loss.

After Zito and Fitzpatrick's goals gave NYIT a 7-5 lead, Kyle McDonough answered for Mercy with 10 minutes, 30 seconds remaining to pull the Mavericks within a goal. Goals by Matt Murphy and LeRoy Halftown then restored a three-goal cushion.

Fitzpatrick, Murphy and Zito finished with two goals apiece.

Brian Jockers improved to 7-1 with a nine-save performance.

NYIT now heads into a Senior Day showdown with LIU Post next Saturday at 4 p.m. at President's Stadium. The Pioneers also are undefeated in the ECC.

In addition to recognizing its graduating players, NYIT will honor alum Dave Rothenberg of ESPN 98.7 FM pregame. Rothenberg and his radio co-hosts, former Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro and former Giants lineman Chris Canty, will be in attendance for the Battle of the Boulevard and will preside over a ceremonial faceoff.
