OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Freshman Kevin Martinez scored his first career goal, but the NYIT men's soccer team lost to Goldey-Beacom, 2-1, on Thursday at President's Stadium.

Martinez finished a pass from Marcos Enriquez Vilches at 60:40 to even the score at 1.

Less than six minutes later, however, Mateus Silvestre's goal for the Lightning proved the game-winner.

NYIT goalkeeper Jonathan Rico made a stellar save on a breakaway by Callum Flynn shortly thereafter to keep the Bears (3-4) within striking distance.

That save, Rico's second of the match, gave him 139 for his career. That passed current assistant coach Huntley Swaby for fifth on the program's all-time list. The career lead belongs to Aiden Lyons with 336 from 1995 through '98.

Martinez's brother Carlos played for NYIT from 2011 through 2014 and helped lead the Bears to three NCAA Tournaments and two East Coast Conference titles. He attended Thursday's match as a spectator.

NYIT returns to ECC action when it faces Mercy at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at President's Stadium.
