NYIT cleans up on ECC awards; five student-athletes handed top weekly honors

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — NYIT Athletics followed up a successful week on the fields and courts by cleaning up in the weekly East Coast Conference honors.

Five NYIT student-athletes claimed top weekly awards from the league:

• John Camponeschi, men's soccer, Offensive Player of the Week

• Casey Luongo, women's soccer, Rookie of the Week

• Alessia Rossetti, women's tennis, Player of the Week

• Noah Simatei, men's cross country, Runner of the Week

• Monicha Jebor, women's cross country, Rookie of the Week

In addition, Dina Simonian (women's soccer), Karolina Moderova (volleyball), Allison Fowler (volleyball) and Ivana Andric (women's tennis) were named to the ECC's weekly honor roll.

Camponeschi, who missed last season with a knee injury, combined for three goals in wins at District of Columbia and Molloy last week — his first goals since the 2015 season.

Luongo upped her goal total to nine, one shy of the ECC lead, by producing goals in wins at Caldwell and Molloy. Her contribution has NYIT off to its best start through 10 matches since the 2008 season.

Rossetti remained unbeaten in singles and doubles play this season as NYIT faced Post and LIU Post this past week. In the latter matchup, Rossetti topped the Pioneers' Stanislava Klymova at third singles, 6-1, 6-3, on Saturday.

Simatei is no stranger to the ECC weekly top honor. For the third straight meet on Saturday, the freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, topped the entire field, including Division I competition, at the NJIT Invitational.

Meanwhile, Jebor was the NYIT women's top finisher at the same meet.
