NYIT alum Rafal Charkiewicz wins Long Island Tennis Challenge pro event

COMMACK, N.Y. — NYIT men's tennis alum Rafal Charkiewicz is the champion of the Long Island Tennis Challenge at The Hamlet in Commack.

Charkiewicz teamed with Columbia alum and fellow Poland native Michael Rolski to earn the men's pro division doubles title on Sunday.

The duo went unbeaten through pool play in a five-team field, then earned a pair of victories upon reaching the final four, including 7-5 in the championship match.

Charkiewicz graduated from NYIT in December with a bachelor's degree in health sciences.

He and Rolski used to practice together as juniors in their native Poland.

"I've known him since he was like 10 years old," Charkiewicz said.

Meanwhile, NYIT head coach Owen Kassimir reached the doubles semifinals in the amateur division.

Charkiewicz earned first-team All-East Coast Conference honors all four seasons he competed for the Bears, from 2014 through 2017. He earned three ECC titles and qualified for four NCAA Championships. NYIT reached the Elite Eight twice during that span.

Charkiewicz also was a member of the ECC Commissioner's Honor Roll as a senior for achieving at least a 3.2 GPA.

He has remained in the area since graduating in December, serving as fitness director at Mill River Club in Oyster Bay and also working at Sportime Syosset.
