Softball tops Southern Connecticut State, departs Florida on winning note

CLERMONT, Fla. — The NYIT softball team completed its trip to Florida on a high note.

The Bears defeated Southern Connecticut State, 5-2, on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, California (Pa.) handed NYIT a 4-2 defeat.

In the victory, NYIT jumped to a 3-0 first-inning lead when Jessica Daniel, Lizul Portugal and Brooke Scherer consecutively singled to open the frame and all three scored. Kylie Lacerte delivered a sacrifice fly and Samantha Melendez had a run-scoring single during the outburst.

Mary Tom singled and ultimately stole second and home in the second inning. And Christine Olivas capped NYIT's run production by singling and scoring in the third for a 5-0 lead.

Sofia Evangelista limited the Owls to one run in five innings.

The Bears (2-6) now head back to New York. The have their home opener on Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Franklin Pierce.
