Pair of NYIT softball signees earn first-team All-Long Island honors from Newsday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — NYIT softball's incoming prep pitchers both have claimed first-team All-Long Island honors from Newsday.

MacArthur right-hander Jessica Budrewicz was named to the first team, while twin sister and batterymate Ashley Budrewicz was named to the second team. Longwood right-hander Emily Koerick — also an NYIT signee — received first-team honors as well, according to the newspaper.

Reporter Owen O'Brien writes about Jessica Budrewicz: "The four-year varsity pitcher went 16-2 with a 1.29 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 247 strikeouts in 130 innings for MacArthur. She graduates with a 77-13 varsity record with a 1.59 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 946 strikeouts in 626 2/3 innings and made two trips to the state semifinals in four years."

As for Koerick, O'Brien adds: "The senior led Longwood to one of the most impressive three-year turnarounds in recent history, leading the Lions to a Suffolk AA championship season and 21-3 record after Longwood won four games in 2016. Koerick finished the season with a 1.01 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 164 strikeouts in 104 innings."

The Bears will be looking for plenty of help from their first-team All-Long Island selections with the graduations of right-handers Sofia Evangelista and Ashley Russo, who combined to start 31 of NYIT's 36 games this past spring.
