OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The NYIT women's basketball team breezed through its East Coast Conference opener Wednesday.

Maia Hood and Taylor Tripptree each produced career scoring highs and the Bears defeated Mercy, 80-49, on Wednesday at Recreation Hall.

NYIT built a 25-point second-quarter lead and avoided a repeat of last Wednesday's game at Concordia, when NYIT had to eke out a 69-60 win after leading by as many as 26 points before intermission.

Against Mercy (3-5, 0-1), Hood finished with 28 points and shot 12-for-16 from the field. Her previous career high had been 27 points while playing as an undergraduate for Lafayette at Colgate on March 5, 2016.

Tripptree had 20 points and 10 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season. Her previous career high had been 17 at Concordia last week.

NYIT improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.

The 31-point victory was NYIT's largest since winning at Bridgeport, 73-42, on Dec. 12, 2015.

The Bears were picked to finish second in the ECC in the preseason coaches poll, but have been starting three freshmen these days due to injury.

During halftime on Wednesday, NYIT honored a pair of players from last year's team for reaching the 1,000-point scoring plateau during their careers — Shanice Allen and Shannon Duer.
