Women's lacrosse picked 10th in opening Nike/US Lacrosse poll

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The NYIT women's lacrosse team has been picked 10th in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division II Preseason Top 20 poll.

The poll, released Thursday, has three other East Coast Conference teams represented: LIU Post (sixth), Mercy (12th) and Molloy (17th).

Adelphi occupies the No. 1 slot.

NYIT returns 12 student-athletes from a thrilling inaugural season that included a 15-4 overall record, NCAA Tournament berth and final No. 10 ranking in the same poll.

Among the Bears' top returnees are Karie Znaniecki (49 goals, 53 assists in 2017), Alyssa Milano (58 goals, 9 assists), Lexi Ruiz (23 goals, 8 assists) and Shannon Donovan (21 goals, 4 assists).

The Bears begin regular-season practices next week and open their second season on Feb. 28 at President's Stadium against Georgian Court.

"We are very proud of the foundation the first-year team created here," coach Kerri Handras said. "We look to build upon that success and continue to be a top contender, competing for a national championship."
