Women's lacrosse picked third in preseason ECC poll

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The NYIT women's lacrosse team came within an overtime goal at LIU Post of earning the East Coast Conference regular-season title in its inaugural season a year ago.

With the graduations of standouts including ECC Defensive Player of the Year Erin Smith, second-team All-ECC midfielder Trisha Serras and second-team All-ECC goaltender Lauren Young from that squad, the Bears will have to reprove themselves during the upcoming season.

ECC coaches have picked NYIT to finish third in 2018, according to a league poll released Tuesday.

"We're excited about the season to start and to prove ourselves in the ECC," coach Kerri Handras said.

LIU Post was selected first. The defending-champion Pioneers received first-place votes from five of the ECC's nine coaches and accumulated 77 total points. Mercy received three first-place votes and 71 points to check in at No. 2. NYIT had one first-place vote and 65 points for third.

The rest of the predicted order of finish: No. 4 Molloy (55 points), No. 5 Roberts Wesleyan (43), No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (36), No. 7 Bridgeport (31), No. 8 Queens (17) and No. 9 District of Columbia (10).

Mercy's Hunter Isnardi has been voted the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while LIU Post's Olivia Kirk is the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

NYIT opens its second season on Feb. 28 at President's Stadium against Georgian Court.
