COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. (May 4, 2014) - Junior Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) posted a convincing 6-0, 6-3 victory over Charlotte Dawson at first singles to clinch the NCAA Division II East Region Championship for No. 11 NYIT Sunday afternoon at Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High School.
The Bears advance to the NCAA Round of 16 for the second straight season, which will be held May 14-17 in Alamonte Springs, Fla.
NYIT swept the doubles matches to claim a 3-0 lead heading in to singles play. Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden) and Burinato earned the first point with an 8-1 win at second doubles. Gabriela Siembab (Chrzanow, Poland) and Claudia Sanchez-Gonzales (Malaga, Spain) then picked up point number two at third doubles with an 8-3 triumph, followed by Alessia Rossetti (Minusio, Switzerland) and Justyna Krol (Chrzanow, Poland) at first singles with an 8-5 win.
Rossetti then made it a 4-0 match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Iman Williams-Mulesa at second singles before Burinato clinched. NYIT was leading at the remaining four singles spots.
NYIT will face the winner of the South Central #2 Regional on Wednesday, May 14.
