Women's tennis falls in Sweet 16, finishes season 16-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The NYIT women's tennis team's stellar season ended in the NCAA Championships' Sweet 16.

No. 23 Southeastern Oklahoma handed the No. 33 Bears their first loss of the 2016-17 season, 5-2, on Wednesday morning.

The match ended when Karolina Pondusova fell to Anna Buiukian at second singles, 6-4, 6-2.

For the Bears, Lena Dimmer and Pondusova — ranked 19th nationally in doubles — got things off on the right foot with an 8-5 win at first doubles.

Ultimately, NYIT's lone other victory came at fourth singles, with Paulina Velasquez defeating Darija Catipovic, 6-1, 6-1.

The women's tennis team suffered its first loss after going 16-0 through regional play.

"They all played hard, stayed focused and fought to the last point," assistant coach Owen Kassimir said.

The men's team fell in the Sweet 16 to Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday, 5-1.
