Volleyball's Allison Fowler, Karolina Moderova repeat as AVCA honorable-mention All-Americans

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The NYIT volleyball careers of seniors Karolina Moderova and Allison Fowler ended with an opening-round loss in the NCAA Tournament last week.

The honors continue.

Moderova and Fowler have been named honorable-mention All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association — both for a second straight year.

Moderova previously had been honored as the AVCA East Region Player of the Year. She also is a first-team All-East Coast Conference selection each of the past three seasons. Moderova completed her NYIT career with 1,603 kills (third in program history), 1,474 digs (second), 195 service aces (sixth), 225 block assists (fifth), 263 blocks (10th) and 4,688 attack attempts (second).

Fowler is the three-time ECC Setter of Year. She completed her NYIT career with 4,596 assists (third in program history), 1,176 digs (sixth) and 195 block assists (seventh). Fowler's  1,370 assists this season led the ECC and ranked fourth in a single season in program history. She had a career-high 65 assists in a critical five-set win at Daemen on Nov. 4 that helped the Bears qualify for the ECC Championships. That assist total was fourth-most in a match in program history.

NYIT volleyball went 25-9 this past season, came within a set of winning a second straight ECC title, and earned its third straight NCAA Tournament berth.

Even with the departures of Fowler and Moderova as well as fellow seniors Megan Mannle and Chessie Santeramo, the Bears are well-positioned for the future. Among the 2018 returnees will be outside hitter Tiffany Verni, an AVCA first-team all-region selection. Verni already has reached the 1,000-kill plateau in only two seasons at NYIT.
